Advocating hate

State Rep. Thomas Yewcic (D., Cambria), who supported the legislation to prohibit same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania,
could not wait to introduce a bill that would end protection for gays following the arrest of the hateful protesters during
the last Outfest gay-pride festival in Philadelphia ("Protesters' arrests bring move to change Pa. hate-crimes law," Feb.
13).

I do not believe that Yewcic is acting to protest the district attorney's charges but instead is finding a way to express his
homophobia and get political support for the American Family Association, a Christian group that should be ashamed
to advocate hatred.

Far from a mandate
Re: "Don't expect Bush to hoard political capital" (Commentary Page, Nov. 8):
Charles Krauthammer's commentary reminds me of the persistent distorted messages from the Republicans before
the presidential elections. Repeat them over and over and people will believe what you say. Seven times,
Krauthammer uses the word "mandate" regarding President Bush's victory. A 3 percent win is far from being a
mandate.
